From May 26 – June 26, 2025 faculty and students from CMU, UHM, the East-West Center, and other Southeast Asian institutions came together in Chiang Mai for a month long field school designed to facilitate experiential, interdisciplinary learning, strengthen academic and research capacity among graduate students, and encourage the building of long-term regional research networks.

Funded by the Henry Luce Foundation, this project was part of a 5-year LuceSEA initiative titled “Transitions: Environment, Society, and Change,” focused on understanding socio-environmental transformations in Southeast Asia. The primary goal was to train the next generation of scholars in field-based environmental research through cross-cultural collaboration and knowledge exchange.

After arriving in Chiang Mai, students participated in cademic lectures by Thai and international scholars, went through an orientation to research locations and Chiang Mai’s socio-cultural context and visited two villages, Ban Huay E Kang and Ban Nong Tao to practice fieldwork and research design. Students split into six research teams (three per village), conducting in-depth qualitative research with local communities.

After returning from the field, participants took part in data analysis and writing workshops at Holiday Garden Hotel and at CMU, culminating in final student presentations of their research findings held at RCSD. A total of 49 participants took part in the entire project, with nine students from Chiang Mai University, nine from University of Hawaii, Manoa, and 15 from Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) in Indonesia, along with 20 mentors and speakers from multiple institutions, including Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University, Chulalongkorn University, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Wisconsin Madison, Cal Poly Humboldt, and others.
