On May 13, 2025, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, through the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), hosted the Southeast Friendship Initiative: Picturing and Seeing Development – Hearing the Voice of the Local in collaboration with Tembusu College, National University of Singapore (NUS)
The event was officially opened by Asst. Prof. Dr. Phaothai Sin-ampol, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs and Internationalisation, who emphasized the Faculty’s commitment to fostering mutual learning among students from diverse backgrounds and strengthening academic collaboration at both regional and international levels.
Participants also gained valuable insights from a special lecture by Dr. Chayan Vaddhanaphuti, Director of RCSD, on the social and developmental contexts of ethnic communities, providing essential knowledge before engaging in field activities.
A total of 14 students from the Faculty of Social Sciences, CMU, took part in this exchange, engaging closely with students from NUS through group discussions, collaborative activities, and field visits. These hands-on experiences aimed to develop practical research skills and foster learning through direct community interaction.
This initiative reflects the Faculty of Social Sciences’ strategic direction towards academic excellence and internationalization by building strong partnerships with overseas institutions, promoting student and staff exchanges, and developing integrated learning models. The project also fosters a shared learning space where global perspectives meet local wisdom.
Furthermore, this collaboration continues to cultivate an international learning environment rooted in community-based knowledge and drives sustainable development in the context of Southeast Asia, aligning with the Faculty’s mission to be a regional hub for social science and sustainable development.
