Chiang Mai University Library (CMUL) provides its service for the first day on 19 June 1964 at Room No.312 of Chemistry Building, Faculty of Science. Later in 1968, its own one-floor building was constructed. When the number of students increased while the available space could not be expanded, the current five-floor building with the total usage areas of 8,430 square meter was then approved to build. Upon its completion in 1979, H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (Her Royal Title at that Time) graciously came to preside over the opening ceremony on 9 February 1980. In 1997, the extension of the building with the area of 6,944 square meter was granted for construction and has been available for service since 2001 academic year. With the existing total usage areas of 15,768 square meter, CMUL are equipped with approximately 1,230 seats for visitors.
