Associate Professor Dr. Ekkarat Boonchieng from the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, in collaboration with researchers from Chitkara University and Banaras Hindu University, has developed a blockchain-based student grievance redressal system using Hyperledger Fabric to enhance data security, transparency, and reliability. The work forms part of the research project titled ‘Blockchain-based Student Grievance Redressal System with Multi-Organization Support’, published in Scientific Reports.
Conventional student grievance systems typically rely on centralized architectures, which can lead to challenges such as data tampering, limited transparency in the review process, single points of failure, and concerns over the privacy of complainants.
In response, the research team set out to design a more secure and transparent system that prevents unauthorized data modification. The development process began with a comprehensive review of existing grievance redressal mechanisms and blockchain-based approaches to identify research gaps. The system was then designed using Hyperledger Fabric, incorporating smart contracts and a multi-organization network structure. During implementation, the team established the blockchain network, developed smart contracts to manage grievance procedures, and created registration modules for users and inspectors. The system’s performance was subsequently evaluated using Hyperledger Caliper, assessing throughput, latency, and its ability to handle high transaction volumes.
The integration of blockchain technology significantly improves transparency, safeguards against data tampering, reduces single points of failure, and strengthens overall system reliability. This innovation demonstrates the potential of blockchain to transform grievance management processes in educational institutions.
Beyond technical advancements, the research contributes to economic, social, and academic development. It enables a transparent and verifiable grievance process, enhances operational efficiency, reduces administrative costs, and expands the application of blockchain technology within organizational systems.
The study was published in Scientific Reports on January 16, 2026. The research team includes Associate Professor Dr. Ekkarat Boonchieng; Harish Kumar, Rajesh Kumar Kaushal, and Naveen Kumar from Chitkara University Institute of Engineering and Technology; and Anshul Verma from the Department of Computer Science, Banaras Hindu University.
