CMU Presidential Scholarship

Chiang Mai University (CMU) is offering 200 Graduate Level Full Scholarships per year, starting from the 1st Semester (June) of the 2019 academic year: an exciting opportunity to study at CMU for both Thai and foreign persons who possess a high potential and who meet the following requirements.

  • Doctoral Degree Scholarships: 100 (in total per year)
  • Master’s Degree Scholarships: 100 (in total per year)

Criteria and Documents Required for the Scholarship Application:

Doctoral Degree Level
  1. Bachelor’s Degree Holder: GPA not less than 3.50 (based on the maximum of 4.00) or equivalent or
  2. Master’s Degree Holder: GPA not less than 3.50 (based on the maximum of 4.00) or equivalent. In case the applicant has studied a master’s degree program with thesis only, the applicant must have published good publication(s) or gained good results in their thesis work. (The publication should be published or accepted to publish in ISI, SCOPUS, IEEE, PubMed or any other international publishers accepted by the Graduate School)
  3. Research Plan provides a description, about 3-5 pages, explaining the research plans at Chiang Mai University. The scholarship is intended for original and publishable research (not for the compilation of textbooks or the writing of general surveys in your field. If possible, the applicant should contact in advance a professor at CMU in the field of intended to study to initiate the research plan together.)
  4. Certificate of English Language Proficiency dated within the last 2 years: IELTS or TOEFL only (IELTS scores of 6.0, TOEFL scores of 550 (PBT) or 183 (CBT) or 79 (IBT), except for applicants who are a Native English Speakers)
  5. Two recommendation letters, one of which must be from current or latest applicant’s major advisor and the other should be from the person most familiar with his/her scholarly work.
Master’s Degree Level
  1. Bachelor’s Degree Holder: GPA not less than 3.50 (based on the maximum of 4.00) or equivalent
  2. An international or a regular graduate program while doing Master’s Thesis (Type 1 or 2) only is applicable. (Programs with Independent Study are not applicable). International programs or programs taught in English will be considered more highly
  3. Research Outline of the program applied for. At least 2 pages detailing the research outline, in addition to previous research experiences and the research work presented at the meeting and/or published to date. Please explain (i) why you are interested in the particular research area; (ii) why you should be awarded the scholarship; and (iii) how you propose to carry out the study
  4. Certificate of English Language Proficiency last dated within the last 2 years: IELTS or TOEFL only, IELTS scores of 6.0, TOEFL scores of 550 (PBT) or 183 (CBT) or 79 (IBT), except the applicants who are Native English Speakers

Criteria and Conditions for Graduation:

In order to graduate, the scholarship grantee must comply with the standard criteria set by the Graduate School and the additional criteria and conditions specified by the Scholarship Committee as in the following sections:
Doctoral Degree Level Type 1: Dissertation or Doctoral Thesis Only
  • Type 1.1 (for Master’s degree holder with a normal 3 years duration of study):
    • At least 2 publications or acceptances to publish in an international journal. One of those must be in the lists of ISI, Scopus, IEEE, PubMed or Web of Science databases and must be in a quartile 1 or 2 ranked by SCImago with the student as the first author, and at least 1 publication in an international conference accepted by the field of study and the Graduate School.
    • The publications with the student as the first author must specify the “Graduate/PhD/Master’s Degree Program in …, Faculty/College/School/Institute of …, Chiang Mai University, under the CMU Presidential Scholarship” in the affiliation or acknowledgement.
  • Type 1.2 (for Bachelor’s degree holder with a normal 5 years duration of study):
    • At least 2 publications or acceptances to publish in an international journal listed in ISI, Scopus, IEEE, PubMed or Web of Science databases. One of those must be in a quartile 1 or 2 ranked by SCImago with the student as the first author. And at least 1 publication in an international conference accepted by the field of study and the graduate school.
    • The publications with the student as the first author must specify the “Graduate/PhD/Master’s Degree Program in …, Faculty/College/School/Institute of …, Chiang Mai University, under the CMU Presidential Scholarship” in the affiliation or acknowledgement.
Doctoral Degree Level Type 2: Dissertation or Doctoral Thesis with Course Works
  • Type 2.1 (for Master’s degree holder with a normal 3 years duration of study):
    • At least 1 publication or acceptance to publish in an international journal listed in ISI, Scopus, IEEE, PubMed or Web of Science databases and must be in a quartile 1 or 2 ranked by SCImago with the student as the first author, and at least 1 publication in an international conference accepted by the field of study and the graduate school.
    • The publications with the student as the first author must specify the “Graduate/PhD/Master’s Degree Program in …, Faculty/College/School/Institute of …, Chiang Mai University, under the CMU Presidential Scholarship” in the affiliation or acknowledgement.
  • Type 2.2 (for Bachelor’s degree holder with a normal 5 years duration of study):
    • At least 2 publications or acceptances to publish in an international journal. One of those must be in the list of ISI, Scopus, IEEE, PubMed or Web of Science databases and must be in a quartile 1 or 2 ranked by SCImago with the student as the first author, and at least 1 publication in an international conference accepted by the field of study and the graduate school.
    • The publications with the student as the first author must specify the “Graduate/PhD/Master’s Degree Program in …, Faculty/College/School/Institute of …, Chiang Mai University, under the CMU Presidential Scholarship” in the affiliation or acknowledgement.
Master’s Degree Level Type 1: Master’s Thesis Only
  • At least 2 publications or acceptances to publish in an international journal listed in ISI, Scopus, IEEE, PubMed or Web of Science databases. One of those must specify the student as the first author with the affiliation or acknowledgement to specify “Graduate/PhD/Master’s Degree Program in …, Faculty/College/School of …, Chiang Mai University, under the CMU Presidential Scholarship”.
Master’s Degree Level Type 2: Master’s Thesis with Course Works
  • At least 1 publication or acceptance to publish in an international journal listed in ISI, Scopus, IEEE, PubMed or Web of Science databases with the student as the first author with the affiliation or acknowledgement to specify “Graduate/PhD/Master’s Degree Program in …, Faculty/College/School/Institute of …, Chiang Mai University, under the CMU Presidential Scholarship”.
Termination of Scholarship (for both Doctoral and Master’s Degree Levels):
  1. Deceased
  2. Resignation
  3. Misbehaviour
  4. Lack of a full-time student status or the eligibility to apply for the scholarship
  5. Unable to live in Thailand due to the Laws, Rules or Regulations of Thailand or any other reasons.
  6. Any other reason(s) that the advisor or Faculty/College/School/Institute has proposed to terminate the scholarship and the scholarship committee has approved the decision, e.g., unable to study, not well performed, lack of study progress, etc.
Period of Study:
  1. Doctoral Degree Level Type 1.1 and Type 2.1: normally 3 years, a maximum of 6 years
  2. Doctoral Degree Level Type 1.2 and Type 2.2: normally 5, years a maximum of 8 years
  3. All types of Master’s Degree Level: normally 2 years, a maximum of 5 years
Period of Scholarship Granting:
The scholarship covers only the normal period of study of each program.
  1. Doctoral Level Type 1.1 and Type 2.1: a maximum of 3 years
  2. Doctoral Level Type 1.2 and Type 2.2: a maximum of 5 years
  3. All types of Master’s Degree Level: a maximum of 2 years
Scholarship Payment:
  1. Tuition Fee: THB 50,000 to 200,000, depending on each program (will be paid directly to the Program as per actual fee)
  2. Life, Accident and Health Insurance: THB 3,000 per year (will be paid directly to the insurance company)
  3. Books and Stationery: in lump sum THB 3,000 per semester
  4. Living Allowance (Food, Accommodation, Local Travelling): THB 12,000 per month while staying in Thailand (if living or doing research outside Thailand, a special agreement is required and the living allowance provided by the scholarship must be approved by the committee)
  5. Settlement Allowance: THB 6,000 on arrival
  6. Thesis Publication Allowance: in lump sum THB 6,000 (once when the manuscript has been accepted to publish)
  7. Air Fare or any other travel expenses from home town/city/country to CMU, and from CMU to home town/city/country: as per actual cost with a maximum of THB 15,000 per trip (once for arrival and once for departure, reimbursement is based on actual receipts)
Restitution:
Scholarship Grantees may have to restitute a total or part of the received scholarship under any one of the following conditions.
  1. Fails to Graduate within a certain period
  2. The scholarship has been terminated due to one of the reasons mentioned above, except upon death.
Restitution may be exempt in an individual case by the approval of the scholarship committee.
Others:
The scholarship grantees are required at times to contribute and engage in activities organized by the university, graduate school, faculty, college or institute on an appropriate regular basis and duration.
Application:
Applicants are required to apply for an intended study program along with the scholarship application (if qualified). All required documents as mentioned above should be in PDF or JPG format and must be submitted on line, e.g. bachelor’s and master’s (if available) transcripts, English proficiency certificate, letters of recommendation, research plan and any other supporting documents such as publications and letter of recommendation from a CMU potential major advisor that states the expected outcomes from receiving the scholarship. The applicants must present the originals and copies of Transcript(s), English test result and personal ID card/passport on student registration and contract signing day.
Applicants who have graduated from a foreign country with the past study record (transcript) and any other documents not in English must also attached the official translations of all documents required.
In case the Grading System is different from that of Thailand, the applicant must attach an official proof of equivalence to the Thailand Grading System.

5. Settlement Allowance: (Once on arrival) 6,000
6. Air Fare or any other travel from home town/city/country to CMU (Once on arrival): actual air fare cost but not more than THB 15,000 15,000

Note:
  1. Minor adjustments in the criteria and conditions may be made upon the conclusion of the scholarship committee which it will be announced in advance.
  2. The scholarship grantee must follow all the Rules and Regulations of CMU as one of the CMU students, and also follow Laws, Rules and Regulations of Thailand as applicable to a foreigner living in Thailand.
