CMU Wins Two Golds at Japan Design Idea & Invention Expo 2025
18 July 2025
Corporate Communication and Alumni Relations Center (CCARC)
Researchers and students from Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Associated Medical Science and Faculty of Medicine won two Gold Medal Awards at the Japan Design Idea & Invention Expo 2025 (JDIE), held in Haneda Airport, Japan. The winning projects were BalanceSync+, an innovation for balance analysis, and the Topical Genistein Plus Bakuchiol and Vitamins (GEN+) product for male skin. This achievement underscores CMU's capacity to produce innovative and beneficial solutions that are recognized on a global stage.
The Japan Design Idea & Invention Expo 2025 (JDIE), which ran from July 5–6, was co-hosted by the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA) and the Japanese Invention Society. The event showcases inventions from around the world, with projects judged by a panel of international experts in design, innovation, and technology.
The first Gold Medal winner, BalanceSync+, provides accurate analysis of balance and movement. It aims to offer detailed data for assessing fall risk and improving rehabilitation efficiency, making it ideal for physiotherapy clinics and elderly care. This project also received the NRCT Special Award for Excellent Invention from the National Research Council of Thailand. BalanceSync+ was developed by a student team from the Faculty of Associated Medical Sciences, including master’s student Ms. Nichanan Kengdacha and fourth-year students Ms. Rattaporn Boonchieng, Mr. Virat Dechakoon, and Mr. Peeranut Ngeoninta, all supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Kittichai Wantanajittikul and Assistant Professor Dr. Siriphan Kongsawat
The second winning innovation, Topical Genistein Plus Bakuchiol and Vitamins (GEN+), is a skincare product for men. Developed by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine, it is designed to combat skin damage and darkening caused by sunlight. A 12-week clinical trial confirmed the product's effectiveness in providing a brighter, more even complexion and reducing dark spots without side effects. The product was created by a team from the Clinical Research Center for Food and Herbal Product Trials, led by Associate Professor Dr. Mingkwan Na Takuathung, Associate Professor Dr. Nut Koonrungsesomboon, and Associate Professor Dr. Supanimit Teekachunhatean.
Additionally, the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) presented certificates to all Thai representatives who received international awards at the event.
