Researching the Soldier Fly for BCG Industry

Chiang Mai University together with Charoen Pokapan Food Co. Ltd. Thailand (CPF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on “Innovative Research on Soldier Fly for BCG Industry.”

CMU’s President Clinical Professor Niwes Nantachit, M.D. accompanied with Dr. Pirat Srichana, Senior Deputy Managing Director, CPF signed the MoU on February 15, 2021.

Associate Professor Dr. Yutthana Pimolsiripol, Director of Food Innovation and Packaging Center, shall lead the research on extracted Oil from Soldier Fly for use as an important ingredient in cosmetics.

CPF has interested in insect-based protein as the black soldier fly: Hermatia illucens, is an insect where its larvae can change organic material into protein and fat, and requires less water when compared with other general sources of protein, and the larvae can be fed with agricultural waste.
