Joint Design and Research Workshop: A Collaboration Between Chiang Mai University and Kyoto Institute of Technology
The joint Design and Research Workshop, a collaborative effort between the Faculty of Architecture at Chiang Mai University (CMU) and the Faculty of Architecture at Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in Japan, concluded successfully on Tuesday, September 16, 2024.

Professor Dr.Nawit Ongsavangchai, Associate Professor Dr.Apichoke Lekagul, Dr.Chonnipa Kanchaikham and Dr.Kunlanun Sukpinij

The workshop was also honored with the presence of Acting Professor Dr. Ekkachai Mahaek, Vice President of Chiang Mai University and Chairman of the Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, who provided valuable feedback on the design competition submissions. In addition, faculty members from KIT were on hand to give critiques and advice on the design projects, including: Professor Dr. Kukuda Akira
Professor Dr. Takagi Masato, Dr. Hiroaki Kimura and Associate Professor Ota Shoichi

This year's workshop was divided into two groups: a Design Group and a Research Group.The Design Group focused on the Kad Laung area, with the challenge of renovating old commercial buildings for modern use while maintaining their design to be in harmony with the surrounding community and its nearly 100 years of history.The Research Group conducted a study of Wat Ketkaram, exploring the area and documenting changes to the neighborhood and its urban components. The group also sought new possibilities for architectural and urban design in the area.

In summary, this workshop emphasized learning about architectural design using the history, lifestyle, and cultural traditions of Chiang Mai as a foundation. It also served as a valuable platform for academic exchange and fostering a stronger relationship between the two institutions.
