CMU and Huawei joins force in driving digital learning through 5G

In the age of technology, CLOUD AI and 5G are becoming increasingly important to the country’s path towards the digital centre and unlocking Thailand 4.0’s potential, particularly in the education department, which would increase the capacity and build strength for global competition in all dimensions, as well as preparing the students and researchers for the world of innovation. These motivations have given rise to the memorandum of understanding between Chiang Mai University and Vice President of Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd. on the Huawei ICT Academy project for building educational cooperation in the digital age. On November 13, 2020, Clinical Prof. Niwes Nanthachit, President of CMU, and Mr Jason Peng, Vice President of Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd., signed the MoU. Assist. Prof. Nut Worayos, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and the executives of CMU joined the discussion on using 5G for educational digital transformation and the potential collaboration on the Huawei ASEAN Academy project in the future.
This collaboration focuses on enhancing the knowledge and skills related to 5G technology for developing the learning system. The topics of trainings provided by Huawei include network communication equipment, cloud systems, the internet of things, artificial intelligence and others. Students are entitled to sit in on the certification exam, which would be beneficial in applying to organisations using Huawei network communication equipment that open for a large number of intakes. In the future, there will be opportunities for students to get an internship and cooperative education at Huawei as well. Moreover, in the event of signing the MoU, Huawei kindly provided smartboards and network communication equipment for CMU.
Due to the ongoing collaboration of CMU and Huawei Technologies (Thailand), on November 18, 2020, Emeritus Professor Kasem Watanachai, Privy Council member and Chairman of the University Council of Chiang Mai University, and Clinical Prof. Niwes Nanthachit led the executive team of CMU in the visit to the Customer Solution Innovation and Integration Experience Centre (CSIC) at Huawei’s headquarter in Thailand. The Centre is a network of world-class innovative learning laboratories that is open to visitors to experience the innovation, as well as the design, development of solutions and ICT applications. The exhibition area where the technology is showcased is now exhibiting 5G innovations and body of knowledge, as 5G is now the key to digital transformation of all industries, accommodating digital transformation, creating a complete 5G ecosystem, and boosting the country’s economic and social growths.
Furthermore, the team also visited Thailand 5G Ecosystem Innovation Centre (5G EIC) at the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa), which was established from the collaboration between depa and Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The Centre’s objectives are to develop an ecosystem and test of digital innovation, and to serve as platform for developers from various industries in the country to exchange ideas and develop 5G innovations. It is also a place to learn and exchange knowledge about 5G, which will be crucial to Thailand’s sustainable digital economy development, in line with the government’s policy driving a digital economy and society.
This collaboration is another big step of CMU for incorporating 5G technology to education to accommodate the growth of the digital world in the future.
