SIN-SIN Vol.1: Yogyakarta
Introducing Artist: Surajate Tongchua

Surajate Tongchua is a Chiang Mai based artist from Thailand who graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, in 2010. His practice employs everyday materials such as receipts, newspapers, textbooks, and found objects to examine social, political, and environmental conditions in contemporary Thailand, particularly in the aftermath of the 2014 military coup. Through these materials, his works reveal fragile relationships between power, memory, urban transformation, and human vulnerability.

Surajate has exhibited widely in Thailand and internationally. Selected exhibitions include Rashomon on Lying Mountain (2025) at Panic Room; There are only Color and Mountain (2025) at Neu Contemporary; Blind but seeing, deaf but hearing, dumb but will say (2024) at Cartel Artspace; The Mountain of Romance (2024) at Numthong Art Space; and Priceless (2021) at Manycuts Artspace.

He has also participated in several international artist-in-residence programs, including the Rikuzentakata Artist in Residence program in Japan in 2016 and 2023. Since 2015, Surajate has co-founded The Bubble Arts Group Space in Chiang Mai, an independent platform supporting community-based art projects, collaborations, and experimental cultural activities.
