CMU Elevates Thai Lychee Quality with Accurate and Non-Destructive NIR Technology, Unlocking Access to Premium Global Markets
27 February 2026
Corporate Communication and Alumni Relations Center (CCARC)
The Faculty of Agro-Industry at Chiang Mai University has advanced Thailand’s agricultural sector with the introduction of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) technology for lychee quality inspection. This innovative approach enables precise, non-destructive grading of premium fruit—meeting a strong export demand for ‘chicken tongue seed’ lychees that are free from borer damage.
Traditionally, lychee grading relies heavily on skilled labor, making the process time-consuming and running the risk of fruit damage. Through this research initiative, NIR technology can now scan the external surface of lychees to rapidly and accurately assess internal quality attributes without cutting or harming the fruit. The system enables effective sorting by seed size, detection of pest damage, and the evaluation of key taste indicators, including soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA).
Results demonstrate over 90% accuracy in seed size classification and reliable detection of borer-related damage. In addition, SSC and TA predictions show strong correlation (R? values exceeding 0.90), highlighting the technology’s suitability for large-scale industrial application.
The study, titled ‘Near infrared spectroscopy for sustainable non-destructive classification and quantitative prediction of quality traits of seed size, pest damage, and quality traits in lychee (Litchi chinensis)’, was published in the December 2025 issue of Applied Food Research, reinforcing Chiang Mai University’s leadership in agricultural innovation and food technology on the international stage.
Beyond improving grading accuracy and efficiency, this breakthrough reduces post-harvest damage, lowers labor costs, and supports more sustainable resource use. The adoption of NIR technology marks a significant milestone for Thailand’s lychee industry, strengthening global consumer confidence and positioning Thai produce for success in premium international markets.
