Chiang Mai Researchers Discuss AI Law and Data Privacy at CMU Summit
29 August 2025
International College of Digital Innovation
On August 18th, a team of researchers from Chiang Mai University's International College of Digital Innovation (ICDI) presented their findings on AI laws in BRICS countries at the CMU Research Summit, held at the Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel. The project, titled "AI Laws in BRICS Countries," was supported by a ฿100,000 research grant from ICDI.
The presentation was led byDr. Michael John Harris, alongside Dr. Phillip Y Freiberg and Dr. Parot Ratnapinda. Following their talk, a productive discussion ensued regarding the future direction of AI legislation in Thailand and the enforcement of the nation's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).
The summit provided a platform for experts and policymakers to consider how Thailand can learn from the experiences of major global economies like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as it develops its own regulatory framework for artificial intelligence. Discussions also focused on strengthening the implementation of the PDPA to ensure robust data privacy for citizens in an increasingly digital world.
