Faculty of Economics Hosts Workshop on Indicator Development and Opinion Surveys to Strengthen the Lanna Regional Data Ecosystem

On 3 August 2026, from 9.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., the Faculty of Economics, Chiang Mai University, through the Lanna Economy and Regional Development Centre, organised a workshop entitled “Techniques for Developing Indicators and Conducting Opinion Surveys” as part of the Leading Economic Indicators and Public Opinion Survey for the Lanna Region Project at Room 2602, Building 2, Faculty of Economics.

The workshop aimed to strengthen participants' knowledge and practical skills in developing economic indicators, conducting opinion surveys, and ensuring data quality. The initiative also supports the establishment of a Data Ecosystemthat integrates academic knowledge with local development by combining quarterly quantitative indicators with public opinion surveys to produce timely and reliable early-warning tools for regional economic monitoring.

The morning sessions featured Assoc. Prof. Akkarapong Untong, Ph.D., from Maejo University, who delivered lectures on “Developing Data Sets and Leading Economic Indicators” and “Multi-Method Survey Techniques and Data Quality Control.”

The afternoon programme included panel discussions on research progress and recommendations for further development by researchers from the Faculty of Economics, followed by presentations from Prof. Mingsarn Kaosa-ard on local development data gaps and the role of higher education, and Dr Norapat Asawallop from the Fiscal Policy Office on data sources, leading economic indicators, and their practical applications.

The workshop also brought together representatives from key partner organisations, including the Bank of Thailand (Northern Region Office), the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (Northern Region), the Office of Agricultural Economics Region 1, the Chiang Mai Provincial Industry Office, and the Chiang Mai Provincial Treasury Office, reinforcing multi-sector collaboration in developing regional economic information systems.

This initiative reflects the Faculty's commitment to strengthening evidence-based policymaking and positioning the University as a hub for regional knowledge and sustainable development through high-quality data and collaborative research.
