Mass Comm CMU Hosts Visiting Scholar from Auburn University USA for Academic Exchange
6 March 2026
Faculty of Mass Communication
The Faculty of Mass Communication, Chiang Mai University, welcomed Sayyed Fawad Ali Shah, Assistant Professor from School of Communication & Journalism, Auburn University, United States, during his visit on 3–4 March 2026. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siwaporn Sukritanan, Vice Dean for Research and International Affairs, hosted the visit and coordinated a series of academic activities aimed at strengthening collaboration in science communication.
During the visit, a roundtable discussion was organized to explore the development of a training program on Climate Change Journalism. The discussion brought together Prof. Dr. Puangrat Kaewlom, a climate change expert, and Piyaporn Wongruang, founder of The Bangkok Tribune online news agency, Thailand’s English-language environmental media platform. Participants exchanged ideas on developing training approaches that can strengthen journalists’ capacity to communicate climate change issues effectively to the public.
In addition, Asst. Prof. Shah shared perspectives on teaching approaches in journalism and science communication with Dr. Nahathai Sanmongkol, a faculty member in the journalism program, focusing on enhancing teaching methods for science and environmental reporting for future students.
As part of the visit, he also toured the Energy and Environmental Economics Research Unit (3E) and the Climate Change Data Center (CCDC) at the Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University. The center develops “DustBoy,” the university’s air-quality monitoring network, which plays an important role in measuring PM2.5 levels and managing environmental data that can be used to support effective public communication.
The visit concluded with a discussion on potential collaboration in science data communication with Professor of Practice Dr. Sate Sampattagul, Head of the Energy and Environmental Economics Research Unit at the University Academic Service Center, Chiang Mai University. The discussion focused on future research and academic activities related to communicating scientific data to the public.
This visit reflects the Faculty of Mass Communication’s commitment to strengthening international academic collaboration in science communication and advancing knowledge that supports the development of students, scholars, and media professionals in addressing emerging global challenges.
