Mass Comm CMU and CUC Strengthen Thai–Chinese Journalism Exchange Through Experiential Learning for Environmental Communication and Sustainability
10 August 2026
Faculty of Mass Communication
The Faculty of Mass Communication, Chiang Mai University (CMU), in collaboration with the School of Journalism, Communication University of China (CUC), organized the CUC–CMU Youth Journalism and Communication Practice Exchange Program 2026 from July 11–21, 2026. The program aimed to promote knowledge exchange in journalism and communication between Thai and Chinese students, while enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills through hands-on learning experiences in the context of Chiang Mai. The program placed particular emphasis on learning about and producing media content related to environmental issues, sustainability, and climate change in northern Thailand.
The program brought together 11 students from the School of Journalism, Communication University of China, and 9 students from the Faculty of Mass Communication, Chiang Mai University. Throughout the program, participants engaged in academic lectures, workshops, field studies, and collaborative activities in mixed Thai–Chinese teams. These experiences were designed to strengthen essential journalism and communication skills, including interviewing, field data collection, news reporting, and information research.
A key component of the program was providing students with opportunities to learn directly from real-world settings. Participants visited a range of environmental and communication learning sites in Chiang Mai, including the Doi Suthep Nature Study Center, Royal Park Rajapruek, the Chiang Mai Green, Beautiful and Fragrant Network, and the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand, Chiang Mai. These field visits enabled students to explore environmental communication from diverse perspectives, including those of academics, government agencies, and local communities. The knowledge and experiences gained through these activities were subsequently applied to the development of collaborative media projects.
As part of the learning outcomes presentation, undergraduate and graduate students from both institutions, working together in mixed Thai–Chinese teams, presented their concepts and progress on three media production projects: “Cross-cultural Insights into Chiang Mai Second-hand Markets,” “Sustainable Transportation in Chiang Mai: Red Car, Electric Vehicle and Motorcycle Culture,” and “Environmental Awareness in Chiang Mai: From Eco Workshops to Community Action.” Each project demonstrated the application of journalism skills through observation, interviews, and field data collection to explore issues connected to the lifestyles of Chiang Mai communities, urban development, and sustainability. The projects also reflected the perspectives of both Thai and Chinese students.
In addition, a doctoral student from the Communication University of China presented the progress of a field-based research project entitled “Social Media Environmental Communication and Youth Interpretation: A Case Study of TikTok.” The study focuses on environmental communication on social media and how young people interpret such content. Data and experiences gained from participating in activities throughout the program served as part of the student’s learning process and contributed to the development of the research.
The CUC–CMU Youth Journalism and Communication Practice Exchange Program 2026 represents another significant activity under the ongoing collaboration between the Faculty of Mass Communication, Chiang Mai University, and the School of Journalism, Communication University of China. The program seeks to equip students with professional journalism skills, cross-cultural communication competencies, and practical experience in working collaboratively with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. At the same time, it aims to foster greater awareness of environmental and sustainability issues—an essential foundation for preparing the next generation of communicators to navigate an increasingly international communication landscape and to further strengthen academic collaboration between the two institutions in the future.
