Chiang Mai University (CMU) has been ranked 1,001–1,200 globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 (THE WUR 2027), with its Overall Score rising to 35.30, an increase of 0.64 points from the previous year.

Strong Progress in Research
The university’s most notable progress this year was in the Research pillar, particularly:
     • Research Environment: 21.1 (+2.3)
     • Research Quality: 52.5 (+0.8)

At the individual indicator level, several areas also showed significant improvement:
     • Research Productivity: +13.9
     • Research Strength: +6.0
     • Research Excellence: +3.9
     • Research Influence: +2.0

These results reflect the continued development of CMU’s research ecosystem, with progress in research productivity, quality, excellence, and influence. In particular, the university has strengthened the quality and potential impact of its research outputs, highlighting research as one of CMU’s key areas of strength.

Over recent years, Chiang Mai University has continuously strengthened its commitment to research and innovation through support for high-quality and frontier research, interdisciplinary collaboration, researcher development, and research support systems. The university has also focused on translating research and innovation into practical applications that create value across the economic, social, and sustainable development dimensions, in line with its direction toward international excellence.

Looking Ahead CMU will continue to focus on improving key indicators that contribute to its future performance in global rankings, particularly Citation Impact, international research collaboration, and stronger connections between research and industry.
The university also aims to enhance the quality, visibility, and citation impact of its research at the international level, enabling its research outputs to generate broader academic, economic, and social impact.

The “THE World University Rankings 2027” results represent another milestone in Chiang Mai University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its research capabilities while advancing knowledge, innovation, and international partnerships.
