MIdS CMU Organizes Green Skills for Sustainability Program to Transform Waste into Value
22 July 2026
Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary School
On Wednesday, 22 July 2026, Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary School, Chiang Mai University, organized Green Skills for Sustainability Program, led by Dr. Pornsuda Insan, Assistant Dean of MIdS CMU, and Assistant Professor Dr. Jirapipat Thanyaphongphat, Chair of the Graduate Program in Contemporary Chinese Language Teaching. The program was attended by MIdS CMU students and staff, who participated in a study visit and hands-on workshop entitled “Creating Value from Waste for a Sustainable Future” at Asia Green Road Co., Ltd. (GREEN ROAD) in Lamphun Province.
The program featured a lecture on “Transforming Plastic Waste into New Products” delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Wetsawan Lakard, an expert from Asia Green Road Co., Ltd. Participants learned about plastic waste management, proper waste segregation, and value creation through recycling processes. The session also highlighted the company's environmental initiatives and community engagement projects, demonstrating how sustainable business practices can contribute to environmental conservation.
Participants were then given a guided tour of the company's recycling facility, where they observed the complete process of converting plastic waste into new products. The visit was followed by a series of hands-on workshops, allowing participants to create practical and souvenir items from recycled plastic materials, including keychains, coasters, flower pots, recycled plastic blocks, and decorative beads. These activities encouraged participants to appreciate the value of resource recovery and the importance of a circular economy through direct experience.
As part of the program, participants also traveled by train from Lamphun to Chiang Mai, promoting environmentally friendly transportation and demonstrating how low-carbon travel can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The program aimed to promote experiential learning by integrating environmental knowledge, technology, and innovation with the development of students' and staff members' practical skills. It also sought to raise awareness of resource conservation and sustainable living in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Chiang Mai University's vision of becoming a leading Sustainable University.
