Launches a Disease Surveillance System for PM2.5 and Weather Conditions Covering Four Northern Provinces
3 April 2026
Faculty of Public Health
The Faculty of Public Health, Chiang Mai University, Launches a Disease Surveillance System for PM2.5 and Weather Conditions Covering Four Northern Provinces, Officially in Use from April 3, 2026
The Faculty of Public Health, Chiang Mai University, led by Emeritus Professor Dr. Suwat Jariyalertsak, Head of the research project titled “Real-time Provincial Disease and Health Impact Surveillance System in Upper Northern Thailand, Phase 2,” has announced progress in the development of a real-time disease surveillance system designed to address haze pollution and climate change. The project has received continuous funding support from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).
In Phase 1, the project was initiated in Chiang Mai Province, focusing on big data management and the development of a dashboard displaying weekly trends of patients affected by air pollution,ย้อนหลัง over the past five years up to the present. The system has been actively used by public health agencies since early 2024.
For Phase 2, the project has expanded to include Phayao, Mae Hong Son, and Tak provinces. It covers respiratory diseases (COPD, pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, and influenza), as well as cerebrovascular diseases. The findings indicate that COPD and cerebrovascular diseases have the highest number of cases, particularly during periods of elevated PM2.5 levels between February and May.
This system enables all provinces to monitor patient numbers in real time, supports public health alerts during high pollution periods, and facilitates effective planning for hospital bed occupancy rates, medical personnel, and medical supplies. It also allows for evaluation of the effectiveness of haze mitigation measures in each area.
The dashboard system will be officially launched and available for use starting April 3, 2026.
