Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University Hosts International Conference “Lan Na and Beyond: Revisiting, Emergence, and Creativity”

On 29 August 2025, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, officially opened the International Conference “Lan Na and Beyond: Revisiting, Emergence, and Creativity” at the Dhani Bhaholyodhin Conference Room. The event gathered scholars, researchers, and participants from Thailand and abroad, creating a vibrant atmosphere of academic exchange.
The opening ceremony featured a report delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Chan Panarat, Head of the Research Administration Center, followed by welcome remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wasan Panyagaew, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University.
The two-day conference, held from 29–30 August 2025, highlights diverse academic presentations and panel discussions covering topics on Lan Na Studies, socio-cultural issues of Northern Thailand, and regional connections with neighboring countries.
Distinguished Keynote Speakers include:
Professor Dr. Katherine A. Bowie (University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA) on “Khruba Srivichai, Lanna Buddhism and the Formation of Modern Thailand”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phinyaphan Potjanalawan (Lampang Rajabhat University, Thailand) on “From Chiang Saen to Kengtung: Warfare, Borders, People, and the Making of Lan Na”
The conference aims to serve as an international platform for revisiting Lan Na’s history and culture, while also addressing emerging issues and fostering cross-border scholarly collaboration. With active participation and rich discussions, the event reflects CMU’s commitment to advancing academic knowledge and strengthening global academic networks.
