Chiang Mai University has once again reinforced its position at the forefront of Thailand’s higher education sector, ranking first nationally in seven subjects in the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2026 and placing third overall in Thailand. Globally, the university is ranked 2,077th among institutions worldwide and is one of 42 Thai institutions included in this year’s rankings. This achievement highlights CMU’s strong research performance on the international stage.
A key milestone this year is CMU’s top national ranking in seven subjects: Aquatic Science, Plant Science, Ecology, Evolution, Behavior and Systematics, Atmospheric Science, Ocean Engineering, Library and Information Sciences, and Law. These results reflect the University’s comprehensive research strengths across science and technology, social sciences, and the humanities.
By subject area, CMU ranked first in Thailand in Agricultural and Biological Sciences (194th globally), Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics (244th globally), and Environmental Science (343rd globally). The University also placed among the top three nationally in five additional areas: Dentistry, Medicine, Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, and Mathematics, demonstrating a strong global performance across multiple disciplines.
Overall, CMU ranks third nationally, after Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University, and ranking ahead of Khon Kaen University and Kasetsart University. The SCImago Institutions Rankings 2026 are based on three core pillars: Research (50%), Innovation (30%), and Societal Impact (20%). In this year’s edition, the societal indicator has been refined, replacing Altmetrics with Media Mentions to better reflect an institutions’ presence and impact in high-quality media.
