The School of Public Policy, Chiang Mai University, held participatory workshops in two flood-prone areas of Nan Province under the Inclusive Signals: Designing Accessible Early Warning Systems in Southeast Asia (IN-SIG) project, with support from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
- 21 September 2026 – Nan Municipality Office. The opening ceremony was chaired by Mr. Suraphon Thiansut, Mayor of Nan Municipality.
- 22 September 2026 – Tha Wang Pha Subdistrict Municipality. The opening ceremony was chaired by Mr. Somboon Srivichai, Mayor of Tha Wang Pha Subdistrict Municipality.
The opening sessions also featured Louielyn Joy Morada, representing UNDRR, who introduced the IN-SIG project and shared its background, objectives, and approach to advancing accessible and inclusive early warning systems.
The workshops brought together local authorities and community members, including women, adolescents, and persons with disabilities, to review and provide feedback on the project’s findings on flood early warning communication.
Participants also shared their experiences, barriers, challenges, and needs—particularly those that may not have been fully captured through the research.
Listening directly to people who live with flood risk helps ensure that research findings reflect local realities and lived experiences. Their perspectives will contribute to the development of early warning systems that are more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of local communities.
An effective warning is not simply one that reaches people. It must enable everyone to receive, understand, trust, and act on the information in time to protect themselves and those around them.
