The Essence of Lanna Tea: Discovering the Spirit of Lanna Tea Culture
7 September 2026
Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary School
The Essence of Lanna Tea, meaning “The Spirit of Lanna Tea,” is one of the signature experiences under LANNA WELLNESS JOURNEYS, a collaborative initiative between MIdS CMU and Sense Dhara Dhevi Wellness Club.
The activity was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Terd Disayathanoowat, a tea enthusiast from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, together with a special Lanna music performance by Asst. Prof. Dr. Thitipol Kanteewong from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ph.D. Wantida Chaiyana, Vice Dean of MIdS CMU, also joined the activity at Sense Dhara Dhevi Wellness Club.
Throughout the day, participants were invited to journey into the roots and cultural heritage of Lanna tea, exploring a lesser-known part of the world’s tea origins and the traditional wisdom surrounding tea and Miang (fermented tea leaves) among communities in Northern Thailand.
From the stories and cultural traditions of tea and Miang to the art of brewing, tasting, and experiencing the unique characteristics of different teas through the senses, the activity offered participants a deeper appreciation of Lanna’s rich tea heritage.
More than simply tasting tea, The Essence of Lanna Tea was a sensory and cultural journey—connecting people with the history, wisdom, nature, and distinctive identity of Lanna through the timeless culture of tea.
